Lord Ashburnham

Bertram Ashburnham (1797-1878), quatrième comte d'Ashburnham, d'Ashburnham Place, Sussex, et son fils du même nom (1840-1913), cinquième comte d'Ashburnham, qui hérite de la collection de son père.

En 1847, Lord Ashburnham acquiert la collection de Guglielmo Libri (1803-1869) puis, en 1849, celle de Joseph Barrois (1785-1855), deux collections essentiellement formées de manuscrits volés dans des bibliothèques d'Europe. La plus grande partie du fonds Libri et une partie de l'Appendix sont rachetés par le gouvernement italien en 1884, qui les confie à la Biblioteca Medicea-Laurenziana à Florence, où ils sont aujourd'hui conservés dans le fonds Ashburnham. Les manuscrits des fonds Libri et Barrois qui avaient été dérobés à la Bibliothèque nationale de France sont rachetés par celle-ci en 1888.

En 1855, il acquiert la collection Stowe de Richard, deuxième duc de Buckingham et Chandos. À sa mort, elle est revendue au British Museum (auj. la British Library), où elle est encore conservée aujourd'hui.
